COMPARISONS WITH THE ENGRAVING

Marco Nicolosino - Engraving- View of Turin (1800s)

DIMENSIONS

Both images measure 191 mm x 413 mm

THE TITLE:
Notably absent on the original design is the fancy lettering and Coat Of Arms present on the engraving. The title "Torino Dal 1818-1840" is confusing and should not be considered part of the "original design". It was handwritten at a much later date. (You can see the ruler marks used to align the letters).

SIGNATURE
The "original design" is signed by Nicolosino (lower left), whereas the engraving is not signed.

MULTI TECHNIQUE DESIGN

When comparing the two images, you will find different techiques used the original design. The background sky and clouds, for example, is an ink-wash type technique. The rest of the design, including the mountains and the city, are on a separate paper that has been layered on. Throughout the design you find different pen and ink as well as pencil techniques. Several modifications are also made using a "cut and paste" type editing in the planning of the composition.

CITY EXPANSION

Comparing the two images, one can see a subtle passage of time. The engraving shows the city has slightly expanded and some buildings have been added or renovated with a second or third floor
